We have all been there, we have been watching booktube flat out or reading a lot of blogs and they are all talking about one book. That one book now seems amazing and you must own it! Your must know what is inside to make it so beloved!
So you buy it. It comes in the post/ out book shop/ downloaded. It is shiny, new and full of promise. Do you read it straight away? You bet your sweet nelly you don’t. Wait don’t?
That’s right, that book you wanted so much gets lost in your TBR forever. This is doubly certain if it is an ebook. Out of sight, out of mind, right?
Today I will shame myself with hyped books I bought through the years and never got to. You are lucky this isn’t a video or you would see me crying over my books like the hoarding dragon I am!
The Poppy War – R F Kaung

I was anticipating the Poppy War for so long. I saw it everywhere and it was all the buzz when I went to YALC. This one is huge so it might be why I’ve been putting it off for so long!
A Discovery of Witches – Deborah Harkness

The TV series had been announced, everyone was talking about how awesome it was going to be. I picked it up on Kindle sale and I haven’t even read the first page. That’s right I have no clue what it’s about at all.
The Black Witch – Laurie Forest

I heard that it was a dark story and that’s all I needed to know to buy it in a kindle sale. I’ve just read the blurb and it actually sounds like a really interesting story that I should get to.
Caraval – Stephanie Garber

Caraval is a story and a half for me. I love the idea of it and like anything circus themed so I reserved it at the library when it came out. I picked it up, didn’t read it. I saw it on Kindle for 99p and bought it thinking I would read it better in that format. Again I didn’t. I then picked it up from the library again this December and didn’t even acknowledge it’s existence.
What have I learned from this experience?
- Don’t be fooled into buying books because they are on sale
- Read your own damn books
- Be on a book buying ban: I haven’t bought a book in 2019 so far ❤
- Use the library, they might not have all the new books but there are many portals waiting for you to jump through
What are some books you have bought because of the hype and not got to?
My TBR is filled with hyped up books that I haven’t read. Throne of Glass, A Discovery of Witches, The Red Queen, Truthwitch, The Hate U Give, and probably dozens of others. It’s such a problem.

It really is! I hope you get to some of the books soon!

A Handmaids tale! I am planning on tackling it soon though

Ooo I read that one and quite liked it, I hope you enjoy!

I’m awful about doing this! The Hate You Give is STILL sitting on my shelf untouched!!! I’ve yet to buy a book in 2019, but I’m not sure how much longer I’m going to be able to hold out… it’s some kind of book blogger curse, I think.

I have the Hate You Give as well just sitting on my shelf wanting to be loved. I think it’s definitely a book blogger thing because you are seeing awesome looking books all the time.

I haven’t bought it but I’ve checked out Throne of Glass from the library twice without reading it and just returned it lol. I have so many books on my shelf where I bought them cause they were on sale or heard good things, but I’ve been super good and not been buying books like that for a few years now, though, I’ve preordered a couple of things and plan on reading them and not letting them become part of the pile lol

I feel you with the Throne of Glass where you take out a popular book and just don’t get around to it. I think I’ve got a lot better as well with not succumbing to that curse.

This Savage Song, but it popped out of the randomizer today so YAY! You definitely should rea Caraval, although it’s sequel is known to be more intense. Well, The Poppy War is still on my TBR, but as audiobook 🙂

I have the Savage Song as well, one day . .. one day I swear. Yay hopefully your randomiser picked the right book for you!

Oof I read Caraval last year I think, took me a while to get there but I got there. I borrowed it from my library though hehe. Hmmm I don’t usually buy new releases, if I do then it’s probably because I love the author and/or their other books. I did buy The Lunar Chronicles a while back, because I kept seeing them everywhere…I’ve not even started Cinder yet xD One day, I will get there.

Did you like it when you read it?
Aww I loved the Lunar Chronicles when I read them, it was such a good story.

I have definitely heard mixed things about Caraval so I will see when I get to it. Hopefully we both get to the Poppy War this year!

oh hey I’ve also heard of but not read all of these 😅 except Caraval, I really liked that one! I feel like I’m most likely to succumb to hype for preorders and classics, so with the former by definition I haven’t gotten to them (since they’re not out, and if I’ve preordered it I won’t request an ARC) and with the latter … well they’ve been around *forever* so the world won’t end if I go on not reading them, and I keep getting distracted by shiny new releases oops 📚

Ooo there is always mixed rapports regarding Caraval so I wonder what side I would end up in. I’m luckily not that bad for preorders and haven’t bought a book yet this year, literally a miracle!

Ouuuh nice read !
let see.. i don’t often go with the hype because well.. novels like Caraval just isn’t for me and am frankly not interrested xD
I guess for me it’d be ; Under rose tainted skies, Eleonor & Parks and I think that’s it ! (though I only have 28books so xD granted there cannot be much ahah)

I’ve learned now to definitely not go with the hype because I’m a complete mood reader and will only read what I feel like reading.
I think I’ve picked up Eleanor and Parks from the library once but couldn’t get into it, I hope you enjoy!

HAHAHAHAA I literally own all of these books (and a copy of legendary, too!) and haven’t read a single one. High five?

High five for how poorly we manage our TBR? hahahaha

WE ARE CHAMPIONS! I am much too much a mood reader to do TBRs, sadly. I don’t even try because it gives me anxiety and misery lol

I only read one of these, Caraval, and I really liked it. I didn’t really have any interest in the others, though, I have actually heard of them.

Hopefully I get to Caraval soon and like it as much as you have.

Yeah – I do this too. I just put them on a list of TBR (don’t buy the books necesarily), but I get busy reading something else and then forget about it.

I 100% forget what’s on my TBR list all the time now, as long as you are lost in a good book it doesn’t matter what you are reading.

I actually am more likely to stay away from hyped books than buy them xD And I only buy books I really want. The Poppy War and Caraval are ones I am really interested in trying but I’ve been waiting until the hype and my expectations die down a little. A Discovery of Witches is one I have no interest in whatsoever >> It looks too close to Twilight for me. I tried a few episodes of the series and that sort of cemented my thoughts about that one >.>

I think I’m more that way now but back a year and a bit ago I would have bought a hyped book when it was on sale and never read it. This is the year of hopefully not buying any book unless it’s never going to be in my library and I must have it.
I just saw Witches and was like hmmm I’ve never really read a witchie book before.

I got Grisha and six of crows because of the hype. I barely finished Shadow And Bone and DNF’d SOC. I also bought the whole HP series and only finished first three books. I can’t think other hyped up books atm.

I tried Shadow and Bone too because of the hype and just couldn’t. I’m glad someone else had a similar time.

I was the same with Shadow and Bone it just didn’t click with me.

So this is the story of my LIFE!!! My hyped and unread books come from book boxes, cover buys, impulse buys, booksta recommendations, bargain buys, pre-order incentives….everywhere. I have enough books to keep me busy for a long time. But I still buy a couple new books every month. Probably less than I did last year though!

Yep it is a trap! I am the same with having a lot of books that could do me for a long time! I think the longer we read the more we get better at not buying everything in sight!

The hype is a trap! Probably not all the time but sometimes. I think as readers we get better as we go along without buying everything around us.

I don’t own any of these books despite seeing most of them on sale at one point or another. 😂 Will I get around to it? Probably not, despite saying that I will.

I would be so proud if I did that seeing all books on sale and being like no sorry I’m ok!

I have Little Fires Everywhere staring at me from my shelves and haunting my dreams. I’ve heard such good things so I picked it up and now it’s a while later and I haven’t even read a single page!
I actually haven’t read any of the ones you’ve mentioned, although I’ve heard good things, so I hope you enjoy them when you finally read them!
